Benefits of massage for pregnant and postpartum women

Pregnancy and postpartum are a time of great changes in a woman's life, whether she's having her first or fifth baby. She is becoming a mother and there are many changes to her body and mind. Massage is a wonderful way to bring harmony to her life during this time of transition to motherhood. It's time time just for you.

PRENATAL MASSAGE:

During pregnancy, women's bodies are constantly changing, as they grow and stretch to accommodate their baby. Prenatal massage can help alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy, especially back and hip pain. Prenatal massage helps to reduce stress, relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and reduce swelling.

Prenatal massage is best done side-lying (with pillows) so there's no excess pressure on your ligaments, back or belly.

POSTPARTUM MASSAGE:

In many cultures, like India and Morocco, new mothers are massaged daily for the first 40 days after birth. Postpartum massage soothes sore back, neck and arm muscles from birth and holding and feeding your baby. New mothers often feel exhausted and regular massage after birth helps them heal and recover from the birth and are a much needed time for her to be nurtured and cared for. It releases feel good hormones like Oxytocin (Love hormone), helping you bond with your baby, assist with your milk supply and feel more connected to your family and other people supporting you. Postpartum massage is time for you to relax and be pampered. Postpartum massage supports muscle and tissue healing and brings balance to your mind, body and emotions on your mothering journey.

As a postnatal doula, I do in-home pregnancy and postpartum massages.
